Laina Dawes Event

Laina Dawes will host the New York launch party for her book What Are You Doing Here?: A Black Woman’s Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal (Bazillion Points) at Saint Vitus Bar (1120 Manhattan Ave.) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on Monday, April 15th at 8 pm.

The night will feature a quick introduction to the book, an evening of live performances, and a formidable selection of craft beer. No cover and no attitude are necessary!

The party will highlight music artists featured in the book with live performances by Tamar-kali, Militia Vox, and Kudisan Kai. DJs Fred Pessaro (Brooklyn Vegan) and Brandon Stosuy (Pitchfork) will spin heavy tracks by black women musicians, ranging from funk rock songstress Betty Davis to the metal band Tetrarch. Copies of What Are You Doing Here? will be available for sale and signing.

“As the title suggests, Dawes has a compellingly idiosyncratic tale to tell about cultural identity and personal passion…[her] understandable difficulty is precisely what makes her struggle interesting.”-The Atlantic

“Dawes has done the metal scene a great service…an important addition to every metal fan’s bookshelf”-MSN.com
