When Florida weekly magazine Folio needed sage perspective and insight on Abba for a local concert preview, of course they turned to Meatmen mainman and punk pioneer Tesco Vee. He’s also the celebrated coauthor of Touch and Go: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine ’79–’83, after all so he’s eminently qualified to weigh in on every inch of Agnetha, Annfrid, and the B-boys. Somehow the article digresses totally into Tesco’s orbit, as he gleefully reveals the extent of his Abba collection. It goes way beyond the clogs.

Most folks, including me, are probably more familiar with the name Crawldaddy than the actual contents of the late-’60s magazine of rock. Well the venerated title is back in some ghostly form, and they’ve dug up a 1994 interview I did with High on Fire/Burning Witch/Nirvana producer Steve Albini where he lays out his anti-bullshit spiel.

Here’s one of the astute things he said:

“…I think Candlebox’s fans hold them very loosely, there just happens to be an awful lot of them at the moment. In five years time, you’ll have as hard a time finding a Candlebox fan as you would finding a die-hard Huey Lewis fan, or a Quarterflash devotee. You do remember what a huge success Vanilla Ice was? Now, you could turn America upside-down and shake it, and not find a Vanilla Ice fan. I still run into people who are rabid fans of something as obscure as MX-80 or the Suicide Commandos. The fact that a band can be quite popular temporarily has nothing whatsoever to do with their ultimate importance.”

This Memorial Day will be a good one for the families of 11 deceased Wiccan soldiers. After a long and embarrassing fight, the US Dept. of Veteran Affairs has added the pentacle to the list of 38 approved religious symbols that can be etched on official headstone markers. So the upright star will join the cross, the star of David, and the crescent in military cemeteries. Ignorance loses, for once.

Now Satanists — don’t hold your breath waiting for the pentagram. They’ll approve the Exxon logo for Army gravestones before you get that.
