On October 30, 1983, obscure Danish quintet Mercyful Fate released its haunting and evocative debut album, Melissa. Guitarists Michael Denner and Hank Shermann, bassist Timi Grabber, drummer Kim Ruzz, and wholly unique vocalist King Diamond conjured an instant masterpiece of dark, occult metal. For this week’s metal history lesson, Ian Christe (“Sound of the Beast”/Bazillion Points) summons the Melissa album in her entirety, including B-sides, alternate takes, and covers by Metallica, Dragonlord, Doomstone, Immolation, Dan Swano, and others. Know your Roots!
