After Lars Ulrich (that guy’s everywhere!), the first face to appear on camera in Spotify’s new Metallica: The Early Years documentary series belongs to Brian Lew, one of a handful of Metallica’s original fans and the coauthor of MURDER IN THE FRONT ROW: Shots From the Bay Thrash Metal Epicenter.

The four-part doc tells the tale of the band’s pimply origins with testimony by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Metal Blade’s Brian Slagel, early days guru K.J. Doughton, and other key players from those early times. In addition to Brian Lew’s unique always entertaining frontline insights, Metallica: The Early Years also illustrates the period with several dozen photographs straight from the pages of Murder in the Front Row by Lew and Harald Oimoen.

Spotify Landmark: Metallica - The Early Years (Chapter 1)

Watch “Chapter One: Metal Militia,” and then register with Spotify for free to continue to binge your way through the series. As Lew explains:

“Honesty is my only excuse: I’ve never used Spotify…but everyone I worked with during this project from the company were very nice and appreciative. So now whenever I see something on the Internets ranting about Spotify destroying the ‘music industry’ or something like that, I’ll be conflicted and confused.”

Relive the events on screen at any time at your own extended and expanded leisure with the mammoth MURDER IN THE FRONT ROW: Shots From the Bay Thrash Metal Epicenter.
