This week’s metal history looks at the so-called “post-metal” phenomenon of epic, atmospheric bands who venture outside classic metal sounds and imagery yet can only be identified as metal due to their aggression and harsh worldview. Check out pioneers including Godflesh, Neurosis, and Isis, plus current-day post-metal practitioners Amenra, the Ocean, Coilguns, and more. Know your Roots!
Trace the long path of heavy metal to its most modern incarnations in SOUND OF THE BEAST: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal, by Ian Christe.

Nice to see Schammasch get noticed

New Godflesh ranks up therewith anything they have done.
I didnt know they had released that, it was pretty good. Obv Liquid Metal didnt put them in rotation….
Mastodon took Russian Circles out on their last tour and they were captivating.

Finally some Amenra recognition. Thanks Ian!
I tweeted you Ian asking you talk about Neurosis and what happened to Simon McIlroy.. Do you know why they switched after Enemy of the Sun and what happened to him? and I was a bit bummed you didnt play anything from Souls at zero, such a good , defining release
Yes, good record. You tweeted about Noah Landis… I wondered what you meant! Well, here’s a massive interview with Simon McIlroy, mostly about the Souls at Zero record, happy birthday! https://www.decibelmagazine.com/2016/12/20/neurosis-outtakes-extended-interview-with-souls-at-zero-keyboardist-simon-mcilroy/
yeah I just corrected my tweet thank you. I was a senior in HS and my buddy and I left for lunch hour , hes like check this band out.( He was more punk rock while I was more Megadeth Coroner and Type 0. )Then I heard ‘To Crawl Under Ones Skin’. We sat in a George Webb parking lot chain smoking in the rain and listened to ‘Souls at zero’ ‘zero’ and ‘chronology for survival’ ; I was addicted to that album. Enemy of the Sun had just came out so those two got heavy rotation.
man how did you find that article, that was great thanks. Says ‘here are the samples Noah’ then just quits. wow. . Too bad.
