This week we herald the unusual and powerful crossover of metal and opera, ranging from early experiments by Celtic Frost and Therion, to specific power metal and symphonic metal uses by Nightwish and Epica. Then comes the darkness: death metal and avant garde fusion by Septicflesh, Igorrr, Skalmold, and Fleshgod Apocalypse (pictured above). It ain’t over ’til the headbangers sing — Know your Roots!

Read the six-octave saga of metal history in SOUND OF THE BEAST: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal, by ROOTS host Ian Christe.

  1. Caught part of this yesterday, anxious to hear the rest. I hope the live version of Slaying the Dreamer was used with Floor singing, so much better. Don’t ever hear Nightwish with Floor on Liquid Metal but hear lots of other Females, missing out on the best one.
